The Treasures theme promotes the role libraries play in documenting and supporting Queensland’s history, people, knowledge, stories and collections
Visit our Toolkit to download posters, logos, a campaign shell where you can add your own text, and other documents to help in your campaign.
Rebrand current activities
Many of the activities your library is already doing may be easily re-branded as part of the @ your library campaign. Review your current programming and incorporate existing activities by adding the @ your library logo or by linking into relevant themes on the calendar.
Link to calendar events
Visit the calendar to see what is happening statewide or nationally this month and plan a themed event or display.
Mystery photographs @ your library
Display one or more images from your collection for which you have little or no, information and offer a prize to whoever can identify it.
Check how the La Crosse Public Library [new window http://www.lacrossetribune.com/articles/2004/02/22/news/02second.txt] in La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA is involving their community in identifying photographs.
Same scene, what year @ your library
Display a series of photos depicting the same (or similar) scenes taken at different times. This could be the main street, the water tower, a series featuring men’s or women’s fashion, a series featuring cars, etc. Ask the public to date the photos from earliest to latest.
Caption this image @ your library
Choose a quirky image from your collection and offer a prize for the best caption.
Treasure drive @ your library
Check if there is an anniversary in your community in the near future – perhaps a building, fire service, school and use the anniversary as an opportunity for a “photo drive” to obtain donations for your collection.
Memory lane @ your library
Seniors are often very interested in photos and images that show scenery, buildings, people or other scenes of long ago. Hold an event which offers the possibility of a trip down memory lane. Find suitable images on Picture Queensland at www.pictureqld.slq.qld.gov.au
Treasures day @ your library
Have a show and tell day where seniors come to library with something to show to an audience of children.
Living Treasures @ your library
Ask the public to identify people within your community who are “living treasures”. Treasures could relate to librarians themselves as treasures, or Elders within an Indigenous community.
Buried treasure @ your library
Host a scavenger hunt where teams have to find information by using all the resources of their library.
Unlock treasures from your past @ your library
• Hold workshops to research your community’s local history, including Indigenous local history. Include photographs and oral histories.
• Host genealogy workshops in partnership with your local historical society.
Share your treasures online @ your library
Encourage individuals and community organisations to create their own websites which can be hosted free of charge through the State Library of Queensland’s Connecting Queensland at www.connectqld.org.au [new window] or email connectqld@slq.qld.gov.au
Promote your treasures @ your library
Organise a series of brief radio interview for staff to talk about some of your library’s “treasures” and resources
Pirates @ your library
Give your children's story time a swashbuckling theme and dress up in your finest pirate gear.
